Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Kalkalator automated kalkwasser reactor.
What is Kalkalator?+
An automated kalkwasser reactor designed to maintain stable calcium and alkalinity levels in reef aquariums.
How does Kalkalator work?+
It mixes calcium hydroxide powder with fresh RO/DI water in a sealed chamber and delivers it to your aquarium. As the kalkwasser solution is consumed through evaporation top-up, it continuously replenishes calcium and alkalinity while maintaining a stable water level.
What are the benefits of using a kalkwasser reactor?+
Kalkwasser supplements calcium and alkalinity without sodium chloride buildup that can occur with two-part dosing. It also naturally raises pH, which is beneficial for coral growth — particularly in systems that struggle with low pH.
How often do I need to refill the kalk powder?+
Each litre dosed consumes approximately 1.5 grams of dry kalk powder. The Kalkalator continuously monitors saturation levels and will alert you when levels drop below 90%, so you always know when a top-up is needed.
Is there a risk of overdosing?+
When properly configured, the risk is minimal. We recommend not exceeding 3% of your total tank volume as your daily dose. The Kalkalator's controlled dosing schedule ensures consistent, safe delivery.
What maintenance is required?+
Clean sediment buildup from the reaction chamber every few months. Regularly inspect tubing, the EC probe, and the dosing pump. Clean the gold probe electrodes with vinegar or citric acid solution if you notice readings drifting.
Will it affect my tank's pH?+
Yes — kalkwasser naturally raises pH, which is beneficial for coral health, especially in systems with lower pH. This is considered one of the key advantages over other supplementation methods.
What tank sizes is Kalkalator compatible with?+
Kalkalator supports everything from nano tanks through to large reef systems. The standard model handles aquariums up to 1,200 litres with 2% daily evaporation and weekly top-ups. Custom sizes are available for larger systems — contact us to discuss your requirements.
Is it safe to run 24/7?+
Yes. Kalkalator is typically run continuously at a slow, constant rate. Some reef keepers prefer to dose only during the dark period to maximise pH benefit overnight — both approaches work well and can be configured through the app.
Does it require an internet connection?+
WiFi connectivity is used for date/time synchronisation, app-based configuration, and data logging. However, it is not required for basic operation — the device can be fully configured and monitored via the built-in touchscreen without a network connection.
